What Is Adult Ortho-K?
Orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K, uses specially designed, gas-permeable contact lenses worn during sleep to temporarily reshape the cornea.
After removing the lenses in the morning, many qualified patients can enjoy clearer daytime vision without glasses or conventional contact lenses.
Unlike LASIK, Ortho-K does not require surgery or permanently alter the cornea. Its effects are temporary, and continued lens wear on a doctor-prescribed schedule is necessary to maintain the correction.
Ortho-K is primarily used to correct nearsightedness and may also address certain degrees of astigmatism.
Results vary depending on your prescription, corneal shape, eye health, and individual response.
Why Do Adults Choose Ortho-K?
Many adults appreciate the convenience of clearer daytime vision without relying on glasses or conventional contact lenses.
Potential benefits include:
-
Freedom for active lifestyles: Enjoy activities such as golf, tennis, running, and other sports with less dependence on daytime eyewear.
-
Convenience at work: Reduce the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses during many everyday activities.
-
A non-surgical alternative: Explore vision correction without undergoing laser eye surgery.
-
Less dependence on daytime contact lenses: Avoid wearing conventional contact lenses during the day when treatment is effective.
-
Personalized vision correction: Specialty lenses are designed according to your individual eye measurements and visual needs.
Ortho-K does not guarantee perfect vision or complete freedom from glasses. Some patients may still require additional correction for reading, night driving, or other activities.
Experienced Adult Ortho-K Care at Eagle Eye Center
Eagle Eye Center has extensive experience caring for hundreds of adult Ortho-K patients, including adults who first began Ortho-K treatment later in life.
Our adult patient population includes individuals who continued Ortho-K from childhood as well as those who first explored the treatment as adults.
Led by Dr. Yachin Bao, OD, FIAOMC, our team emphasizes careful patient selection, individualized specialty lens fitting, ongoing clinical monitoring, and long-term eye health.
We recognize that adult patients may have different visual needs and clinical considerations from children, including occupational demands, dry-eye symptoms, astigmatism, and age-related changes in near vision.
Our goal is to help each patient make an informed decision about whether Ortho-K is an appropriate option.

Is Adult Ortho-K Right for You?
Adult Ortho-K may be worth considering if you:
-
Have nearsightedness, with or without certain levels of astigmatism.
-
Want greater freedom from daytime glasses or contact lenses.
-
Participate in sports or other active pursuits.
-
Prefer to avoid or postpone refractive surgery.
-
Have difficulty or inconvenience wearing conventional daytime contact lenses.
-
Can consistently follow lens hygiene instructions and attend regular follow-up visits.
Not everyone is a suitable candidate. Corneal shape, prescription, tear-film health, eye conditions, and lifestyle requirements all influence treatment suitability.
A comprehensive examination is necessary before beginning Ortho-K.
Our Adult Ortho-K Evaluation and Fitting Process
Step 1 — Comprehensive Consultation
We begin by discussing your vision, eye health, lifestyle, and treatment goals.
Your doctor evaluates whether Ortho-K may be appropriate and explains its potential benefits, limitations, and risks.
Step 2 — Detailed Corneal Evaluation
We use corneal topography to map the shape of your cornea, together with appropriate prescription and eye-health measurements.
These findings help guide the design and selection of your specialty lenses.
Step 3 — Personalized Lens Fitting
Your Ortho-K lenses are selected or customized according to your eye measurements and clinical needs.
Your doctor evaluates lens fit and provides instructions for safe insertion, removal, cleaning, and overnight wear.
Step 4 — Initial Follow-Up
After beginning treatment, you return for follow-up examinations to assess your vision, corneal response, lens fit, and eye health.
Additional lens adjustments may be necessary.
Step 5 — Ongoing Care
Regular follow-up appointments help monitor the effectiveness and safety of your treatment.
Your doctor will recommend an appropriate wearing schedule, lens replacement plan, and ongoing examination schedule.
Adult Ortho-K and Presbyopia
As adults reach their 40s and beyond, they may experience presbyopia, a normal age-related reduction in near focusing ability.
Some adults with presbyopia may still be candidates for Ortho-K. However, correcting distance vision does not necessarily eliminate the need for reading glasses.
Depending on the individual, your doctor may discuss different visual correction strategies, including distance-focused correction, monovision, or other specialty lens options when appropriate.
Every approach involves potential benefits and compromises. A personalized examination is essential.
Is Overnight Ortho-K Safe?
Ortho-K is a prescription contact lens treatment that requires careful fitting, proper lens care, and ongoing professional monitoring.
Like other contact lenses, Ortho-K carries risks, including eye irritation, corneal injury, and infection. Overnight contact lens wear can cause serious complications, including microbial keratitis, which may threaten vision.
To reduce risks:
-
Follow your doctor's prescribed wearing and replacement schedule.
-
Clean and disinfect lenses exactly as instructed.
-
Never expose contact lenses or storage cases to tap water or other non-sterile water.
-
Attend all recommended follow-up examinations.
-
Remove your lenses and contact your eye doctor promptly if you experience pain, significant redness, unusual light sensitivity, discharge, or reduced vision.
Proper patient education and follow-up care are essential parts of our Ortho-K program.
Ortho-K 适合您吗?
This information is intended for patient education and does not replace an individual eye examination, diagnosis or treatment recommendation. Ortho-K results and risks vary by patient. Contact an eye doctor promptly if lens wear causes pain, significant redness, light sensitivity, discharge or reduced vision.
This version reflects current guidance that Ortho-K may slow myopia progression but is not guaranteed, while overnight lens wear requires strict hygiene and ongoing monitoring.
